Fundamentally, is SEO worth the investment?

rule

Having operated within the industry for some time now, we have grown to understand that many people fail to see the benefits of Search Engine Optimisation. We are well aware that people new to the Internet Marketing scene quite often feel that SEO is simply a way to throw away money, with little-to-no return on their investment.

It's always great to hear of SEO success stories, as it allows for those who fail to see the potential which the service offers, to be educated of the benefits from another source.

A recent SEO Round Table blog drew attention to a WebmasterWorld thread in which an SEO told of his experience developing two websites simultaneously, both of which operate in the same sector, in order to monitor the effect of their different SEO strategies.

Whilst one site employed traditional SEO methods which include link building, doorway pages and content development, the other focused on unique content, the inclusion of videos, blogs and RSS feeds, with no doorway pages.

In an ideal world, the second of the sites would be the site which we would all wish to perform best (particularly those who don't believe in SEO), yet, the first site continues to reap the rewards of a more comprehensive strategy, and earns far more revenue than the second.

The concept of organic optimisation is constantly evolving, and changes are always being rolled out in order to improve the results which the Search Engines return following a query. Despite this, the Search algorithms are not yet capable of finding and rating sites such as our second example with the rankings which they potentially deserve.

We've no doubt that over time, Google and the other Search Engines will slowly move toward ranking sites such as our second example, thus creating an improved web-world which we all talk about. Unfortunately, the mere nature of a Search Engine suggests a reliance on a ranking algorithm, meaning that there will always be rules and criteria to adhere to in order to maximise a site's online presence.

Ultimately, SEO is here to stay, and the sooner you get onboard, the more successful your business will be!
